Willie D. Thompson, age 80 of Lima, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2021, at 6:27 pm, Lima Memorial Health System.

She was born June 21, 1940 in Greenwood, MS, to Willie and Roberta (Streeter) Johnson who preceded her in death.

Survivors include: her daughter, Deborah L. Thompson of Lima; two stepsons: Cornell (Sherry) Cole of New Orleans, LA and James A. Averett of Lima and the following siblings: Norman A. Johnson of Lima, Marshall Fullwood, Curly Fullwood and Ray (Vicky) Fullwood all of Dayton, Patricia Williams of Oakland, California and Carolyn J.Williams of Cincinnati; a goddaughter, Gwendolen R. Lane of Lima; a spiritual daughter, G. Pamela Savage-Singleton of Crestwood, KY; two special nieces, Kalietha S. Johnson of Atlanta, GA and Tenisha L. Johnson of Columbus, OH; a special nephew, Montrezz D. Williams of Dayton, OH; a sister-in-law, Ethel Dawson-Newby of Lima.

Willie was a retiree from the State of Ohio, working as an Equal Employment Coordinator. She was a member of Kibby Street Church of Christ. She was a committee member on the Mayor’s Task Force on Housing and on the Mayor’s Minority Caucus. She was a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Resource Identification Committee of the Locomotive Works Heritage Center Planning Project. She was the local African American community coordinator of the “Telling the African American Story in Lima, Ohio”. She was a board member of the Project Inroads minority mental health organization. She was a member of the Council of Neighborhood Groups. She was the African American history program coordinator for the Brotherhood of Fellowship Union. She was a member of the Mayor’s Goal Development Committee. She was a consultant for the Leader’s Advisory Committee from area banks. She was founder and president of Northwest Perry Township Revitalization Group and implemented the installation of street lights, the decrease of trash being dumped in the township and residents began to have more pride in their community, a member of Fair Housing Board and a tutor for the Literacy Council of Northwest Ohio, mentoring for city schools and alternative schools in Lima.

She was a researcher of black history and gave talks as part of the “Excellence in Action” speakers bureau office of black Catholic ministers in Toledo. She was a past member of the Lima Area Clergy Caucus on Housing and the Salvation Army Social Services steering committee. She graduated from Shawnee High School, Northwest Business College with an Associate’s degree in business administration and attended Bluffton College. She was a member of Bank One Community Advisory Council, American House Board of Directors, Community Housing Improvement Strategy and Life’s Choices Steering Committee. She was a former member of The National Management Assoc., Lima, Ohio Chapter, Inc. and was currently in charge of distribution. She was formerly employed at Sheller Globe Corporation, Superior Lima Division as secretary to the Employee Relations as a claims clerk. She had been previously employed by Blue Cross of Lima as a claims clerk. She was a member at large of the Allen County Legal Aid Board, a member of Lima Buckeye Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association.

She was a board member of the Regional Planning Committee and a LACNIP board member. She received the Allen County Good Neighbor Award. In 1997, she received the Neighborhood Enrichment Award and the JCPenney Award. She was also honored June 21, 2020 by the Mayor as Willie Thompson Day.

Private family services will begin at 4:00 p.m., Friday, April 16, 2021 at the Shawnee Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Crermation Services, Rev. Dr. Alex Hill to officiate the service.
