Walter “Pete” H. Martin, Jr., 87 of Columbus, formerly of Lima, passed away September 14, 2019, at Danbury Senior Living.

Pete was born April 24, 1932 in Lima to Walter and Marie (Shafer) Martin, who preceded him in death. On December 27, 1953, he married Barbara Lou (Hahn) Martin who preceded him in death in 2008.

Pete is a 1950 graduate of Lima South and went on to get his undergraduate degree and graduate degree from Miami University; he later received a second graduate degree from the University of Dayton. Pete taught at Lima South Junior High and Lima Senior for 22 years and worked as a guidance counselor for 7 years, until he retired in 1986. Even after he retired, he taught part time at The Ohio State University, the University of Dayton and the University of Northwestern Ohio. All in all, Pete taught for over 50 years and loved teaching. He served in the United States Army and was an active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Pete enjoyed carpentry work and remodeling; he built his own house. He was a history buff who loved to take his family traveling and camping. Pete enjoyed reading and doing his crossword puzzles. More than anything, Pete adored his family, especially his grandkids.

Pete is survived by his daughter, Lisa Nichols-Siferd; son, Michael James (Christine) Martin; daughters, Debbie (Randy) Allen and Lori (Perry) Kallas; grandchildren, Sara (Dan) Miller, Todd (Beth) Nichols, David Siferd, Ashley (Lucas) Phillips, Timothy Kallas, John Kallas and Caroline Wright; great-grandchildren, Bryer Miller, Kevin Nichols and Keegan Nichols and his sister, Betty (Dwight) Nicolet.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his son-in law, Kevin Nichols.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Ted Bible to officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 17, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM & 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
