Always interested in music, Dick wrote the music and lyrics for two campus musical shows while attending Miami University. He was also an accomplished pianist. He additionally served as President of the Lima Area Chamber of Commerce (1976-77), President of the Lima Rotary Club (1973-74), and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Lima Technical College (now Rhodes State College). In 1974 traveled to Israel as one of a delegation of U.S. media representatives selected by the American Zionist Federation. Dick and Norma loved to travel and enjoyed trips to many places including China, Israel, Greece, France, the Caribbean Islands and across the USA. He served as Campaign Chairman of the United Way of Greater Lima for two years and as their President in 1979. As Chairman of the Lima Rotary River Walk Committee in 1986 he steered the successful fund raising effort to construct the original 4.8 miles of the River Walk. After retiring from active business his civic commitment continued for several years by serving as Development Director of the Lima Symphony. Richard was also active in serving his church, First Church of Christ Scientist, in numerous capacities including terms as First Reader, Sunday School Superintendent, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
