Phyllis Ann (Penhorwood) Boyd, 94, of Hudson, OH and formerly of Lima, OH, passed away October 27, 2021 at 9:40 AM at Anna Maria of Aurora.
She was born July 14, 1927 in Tiffin, OH to Rev. E.J. and Imogene (Peterson) Penhorwood who preceded her in death. On August 22, 1948, she married David Boyd who preceded her in death on April 28, 2008.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Boyd, married to Shirley Ng, and four grandchildren, Dr. Elizabeth Kudlaty, married to Christopher Lyons, Michael Kudlaty, Nym Boyd, and Stephanie Boyd.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, David Boyd; daughter, Bethany Boyd; 3 brothers, Donald Penhorwood, Erwin Penhorwood and Kenneth Penhorwood; and 4 sisters-in-law, Betty (Boyd) Penhorwood, Ruth Penhorwood, Jean Penhorwood and Ruth Boyd.
Phyllis was an homemaker and a lifelong volunteer. She grew up in Lima, OH where her father was minister at the South Side Christian Church for over 43 years. She attended Ohio State at the same time as her 3 older brothers who had returned back home after military service during World War II. While in college, she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and was part of a 4 member choral group who sang for other sororities and fraternities on campus. She had been a candy striper at Lima Memorial Hospital and also organized blood drives for the Red Cross in Winchester, MA, doing volunteer work in hospitals for over 10 years. When her daughter Bethany was growing up, she acted as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. At the same time, she was on the Membership Committee and in the Choir of the Methodist Church in Park Ridge, IL. She also served on the Board of the Park Ridge School for Girls, an orphanage, helping to organize the Decorator’s Show Case. After moving to Louisville, KY, she was instrumental in the establishment of and scheduling at the Presbyterian Church Crescent House Tea Room which raised funds for autistic children. Phyllis lived in Hong Kong for 6 years where she was an active member of the American Women’s Club serving as a tour guide for new members as well as for US sailors arriving by ship and submarine at Hong Kong’s Navy Pier. After moving back to the US, she lived in Savannah, GA for 17 years where she served as an elder at the Presbyterian Church on Skidaway Island and taught reading to adults at the Royce Learning Center where she won a Literacy Award in 1993. Her later years were spent back in her home state of Ohio to be together with family and friends where she continued to be a lifelong Ohio State Fan!
Phyllis enjoyed traveling and living throughout the US including in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Illinois, Kentucky and Georgia and particularly overseas in Hong Kong. She loved decorating and was a consummate collector of antiques and oriental art.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the Shawnee Chapel of Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services on 1170 Shawnee Road, Lima, OH. Visitation hours will be between the hours of 1:00 PM to 4:00 with Service starting at 4:00 PM. Rev. Wanda Werking will be officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to South Side Christian Church, the James E. Romey and Donald R. Penhorwood Memorial Scholarship at Lima Senior High School, the E.J. and Imogene Penhorwood Scholarship Fund at Bethany College in Bethany, WV, or the American Cancer Society.
