Paul Ellis Shellabarger, age 73, passed away after a short illness on August 11, 2021, at St. Rita’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lima to Walter C. Shellabarger and Rita M. (Yochum) Shellabarger on May 2, 1948. While serving as the Ohio Steel corporate advisor to Junior Achievement, Walter met a vivacious JA member, Candy Martin, and set her up on a blind date with Paul. The match was successful, Paul and Candy were married on April 20, 1968, and his beloved wife lives on in Elida. He also leaves behind his daughter, Julie (Kirk) Fosnaugh of Elida, and his son Lindsay (Michelle) Shellabarger of Spencerville. He has five grandchildren: Haley, Hannah, and Nicholas Fosnaugh; and Austin and Emersyn Shellabarger.
He leaves behind his sisters, Carlajean Smith and Karen Owens of Lima, and sisters-in-law Sue Langbehn of Lima; and Teri Hunt, Linda Leathers, and Frances Sowders of Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Kathryn Warner, his brother Joseph who died in infancy, and his brother-in-law John H. Smith. Paul’s Stepmother, Geneva Shellabarger, survives in Lima, and his former daughter-in-law, Becky Shellabarger-Colgan, survives in Delphos. He will be greatly missed by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews who admired him for his intelligence and sense of humor.
Paul was a 1966 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School. He worked for many years at Ohio Steel and Teledyne in Lima, and retired from Duramax Tokai Rubber (DTR, later SumiRiko) in Bluffton. He was a skilled woodworker, an avid history buff, and a music lover. He was a fan of Ohio State football and LCC T-Birds basketball, and loved playing basketball himself in his younger days. He enjoyed trips out to the western states of America, and he and his family were frequent visitors to Walt Disney World, often traveling there several times a year, making many wonderful memories that will last them always.
Though the family will miss him here on Earth, they take comfort in knowing he is probably right now playing canasta and euchre with Walter, Kay, and John, while Rita is making beef and noodles and a chocolate pudding pie. If practical jokes can be played in Heaven, Paul will certainly be involved!
Visitation will be Monday, August 16, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the Chiles-Laman Funeral Homes Shawnee Chapel at 1170 Shawnee Rd. A funeral service will take place the following morning on Tuesday, August 17, at 11:00 a.m. also at the Shawnee Chapel. Burial will take place after the service in Gethsemani Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Allen County Humane Society.
