Michael P. Bruin, 88, passed away on Tuesday December 29, 2020, at 8:29 pm, at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center, due to Covid-19.

Michael was born October 18, 1932, in Lima, OH, to Paul and Marie (Burke) Bruin who preceded him in death. While in grade school, he met Ruth Walsh and told her that he was going to marry her someday. On November 24, 1955, he married Ruth (Walsh) Bruin, who survives in Lima, OH. They just celebrated 65 years of marriage together.

Mike graduated from Lima St. John’s High School in 1951. After high school he studied Education at the University of Dayton. Two years later, he enlisted in the Army. He served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged. He then finished up his bachelor’s degree in Education at Ohio Northern University and later received his master’s degree in Business Administration from Indiana University. He was a history and civics teacher at Russia and Elida High schools. He taught OWE at Ada and Bath High Schools. Mike was also a bus driver, and found time to coach basketball, football, baseball, tennis and golf while raising five kids during his 32 years in education. For the last 13 years, Mike, known as “Coach Grandpa” assisted his son Kevin as tennis coach at Lima Central Catholic. He coached high school kids in one sport or another from the 1950’s thru 2020. He truly enjoyed and loved all the great kids he coached, but his favorite kids were his 5 children. After retiring from teaching, he and Ruth sold real-estate with Yocum Realty for 25 years.

Mike was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, the Eagles, VFW, American Legion and the Elks. He was recently honored to participate in the Honor Flight.

Mike is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Bruin of Lima, OH, children, Kevin (Cindy) P. Bruin of Lima, OH, Michael (Ellen) Bruin, Maureen (Jim) Tozzi both of North Canton, OH, Sheila (John) Niese of Chesterfield, MO, Kathy (Kevin) Reid of New Richmond, OH,

Mike is survived by his sister Johanna (Bob) Navarre (Julie & Megan). He is preceded in death by his brothers, William “Bill” (Phyllis) Bruin (Bill, Shawn & Tim); and Tom (Jan) Bruin (Danielle Hartman).

Grandchildren; Sarah (Ryan) Malcom, Kevin (Monica) Bruin, Brian Bruin, Jenny (Jon) Luli, Michael Bruin, Timothy “Tim” Bruin, Anthony “Tony” Tozzi, Ryan Tozzi, Theresa (Nick) Valentino, David (Jenna) Niese, Daniel (Sean) Niese, Mary Beth (Robbie) Graninger, Michael Niese, Kaitlyn Reid, Kyle (Allie) Reid, Kevin Reid, Krista Reid.

Great-grandchildren; Brady and Gracy Malcom, Kevin and Keaton Bruin, Lily Tozzi, Nick, James and Michael Valentino, Lilly and Grace Niese,

Mike was the proud uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Lima St. John’s Church at 10:00 am 1/23/2021, with visitation at the church one hour prior to the start of mass. Rev. Dave Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery following the service. If you come to the service please respect our request to stay socially distanced and properly wear a mask.
