Larry D. “Woody” Wood, 82, of Lima passed away at 10:44 AM on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at Springview Manor Nursing Home.
He was born on October 17, 1940 in Elyira, OH to Earl E. and Elsie L. (Amstutz) Wood, who both preceded him in death.
Woody proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. He worked for the Lima Fire Department for 27 years and retired in June of 1992 and had worked as a sheet metal worker for #224 Local, Dayton. During high school, he and his brother ran cross country and finished first and second in the Greater Cleveland Conference.
He was a member of the Firefighters Local #334, Elks BPOE #54, Eagles Aerie #370, American Legion Post #96, Orioles Nest #173, AMVETS Post #1 and Moose Lodge #199. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. Woody was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Surviving are his significant other Jane Sawmiller of Lima; his daughters Dawn Rose Wood-Harrington of Berea, OH, Darla L. (Bryan) Hatfield of Ponchatoula, LA and Dee Ann (Mark) Prizner of Parma, OH; his grandchildren Heather Hatfield, Bryan (Angela) Hatfield, Amanda (Jeremy) Bell, Christina Harrington and Melissa (Ryan) Sheridan; his great-grandchildren Grayson C. Hatfield, Blakely B. Bell, Tenley K. Bell, Hartley Bell, Kennedy Sheridan, Jake Sheridan, Wesley Hatfield and one on the way. He is also survived by his sisters Shirley (Joe) Potprocky of Charlestown, IN, Mary Kersker of Harrod and his brother Gary L. Wood of Lima; multiple nieces and nephews and all of Jane’s family.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Menno and Bessie A. (Yant) Amstutz; his paternal grandparents Garfield and Bessie A. (Rimer) Wood; his sisters-in-law Caroline Humphreys Wood and Donna Dickerson Wood; his brother-in-law Don Kersker.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL, where the Lima Fire Department Honor Guard will post guard.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL, with Father David M. Ross officiating.
Final military honors will be performed following the services at the funeral home by active duty member of the U.S. Navy and VFW Post #1275 Honor Guard.
Interment will be at a later date in Hartford Cemetery, Spencerville.
