Joseph R. “Joe” Ballinger, age 92, passed away on December 13, 2020, at 10:00 pm, at the Gardens at Wapakoneta.
Joe was born October 14, 1928 in Lima, OH, to Jess Ballinger and Stella (Mumper) Godwin, both of whom preceded him in death. On December 30, 1950 he married Shirley A. (Roeder) Ballinger who preceded him in death on January 14, 2010.
Joe served with the United States Army during the Korean War and then worked as a foreman with American Electric Power for 43 years, where he was a credit to his field. He loved to watch sports, especially when OSU and Shawnee were playing. He was a season ticket holder at Shawnee since the sixties, and greatly enjoyed watching everything from girls softball to boys basketball. He was quite involved with sports himself and was known for being one of the best athletes to ever come out of the city of Lima. He greatly excelled in the sports programs with the Lima Central High Dragons basketball and baseball teams, and was a 2-way starter with their 1946 state championship football team. Throughout his life he participated in many bowling leagues and especially enjoyed bowling with his buddies in Bluffton. He was an avid fisherman, and could often be found at Indian lake where his fishing buddies knew him as “Lima Joe.” He loved vacationing with his beloved wife and they were eventually able to visit every US state. Ultimately, Joe loved his family above all else. He was an exceptional man and will be greatly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
