Jean E. Schmidt, age 91, passed away on August 26, 2022, at 6:14 pm, at the Marion General Hospital. Jean was born March 7, 1931, in Ada, OH, to Edgar M. and Lola O. (Cotner) McElwain who preceded her in death. On September 24, 1950, she married Thomas L. Schmidt who preceded her in death on July 3, 1999.
Jean was a 1949 graduate of Lafayette Jackson High School. She had worked for the Lima Post Office and was the first woman postal carrier in Lima. She had worked in many different places throughout her career. Jean was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lafayette. She loved animals and children. She also loved attending OSU Football games and all sorts of sports activities.
Jean is survived by her children: David T. Schmidt of Lafayette, OH, Carol “Ann” Kiefer of Lima, Ohio, Susan (Robert Startzman) Schmidt of Marengo, OH, Lynn (Greg) Winkler of Gallatin, TN and Scott (Dawn) Dodds of Jamestown, KY, 7 grandchildren: Amanda Vermillion, Alex (Katlynn) Winkler, Richard Kiefer, Christa (Pete) Beullens, Travis (Christine) Dodds, Tiffany (Heather) Keiser and Tara (John) Theis, 14 great grandchildren: Avery Winkler, Ollie Kiefer, Brianna Kiefer, Kassie Harris, Eli Harris, McKenzie Beullens, Kaylee Kiefer, Brianna, Blake and Brodie Dodds, Devon and Hannah Kiser and Jake and Dax Theis. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Maxine (Ronald) Holman and Eleanor (Basil) Fisher, a daughter in-law, Vicki Joe Schmidt and a son in-law, Joseph Kiefer.
There will be a funeral service held on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 11:00 am at the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, EASTSIDE CHAPEL. Officiating the service will be Vicar Ryan Cordle. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Friends may visit at the EASTSIDE CHAPEL on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.chiles-lamanfh.com.
