Gerald (Jerry) E. Rhine, age 89, passed away peacefully May 20, 2022, at Mercy Health surrounded by his family. He was born on August 16,1932, in Lima, Ohio to the late Kenneth and Mary (Horstman) Rhine. He married Frances (Pentenburg) Rhine on September 7,1957. She preceded him in death on March 23,1999. Jerry is survived by his son, Gary (Shari) Rhine, Patty (Glenn) Gaffer, Karen Rhine and Linda (John) Stepp. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah) Rhine, Brennan Gaffer, Lauren Stepp and Jefferson Stepp and a great granddaughter, Emma Rhine. Other survivors include his sister, Rose Snyder, brothers, David Rhine and Paul (Carmella) Rhine, sisters-in-law, Frances Rhine, Jane Falk, Mary Pentenburg, brothers in law, John Ickes and a special friend, Barb Kriegel. He was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Ickes, brothers, Kenneth Rhine, Richard Rhine, Walter Rhine and Robert Rhine, sisters-in-law, Eleanor Rhine, Donna Rhine, Jacqueline Rhine, Jan Rhine, Julie Pentenburg, Dorothy Pentenburg, Mary Bowman, Frances Pentenburg and Louise Pentenburg and brothers-in-law, Joseph Snyder, John Pentenburg, Louis Pentenburg, Carl Bowman, George Pentenburg, Thomas Pentenburg, Daniel Pentenburg, Firman Ruen and Bob Falk.
Jerry graduated in 1950 from Lima St. John’s. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked at Nickles Bakery, Equitable Life Insurance, Duff, Roadway and Preston Truck Lines. He was a member of the Teamsters, K of C and American Legion. Faith and family were most important to him. He was an active member of St. Gerard’s since 1960, as well both St. Gerard’s and St. John’s choirs. He was a dedicated servant to St.Gerard’s including the annual festival and decorating the church for Christmas, as well as a volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 12 noon at the St. Gerard’s Catholic Church. Officiating the mass will be Fr. David Ross. Entombment will immediately follow in the Gethsemani Cemetery Mausoleum where military honors will be provided by the VFW #1275.
Friends may visit at the church one hour prior to the mass. The. CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL is honored to be assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
