Edmund M. “Ed” Hearne, age 76, was called home to the Lord at 12:20 p.m. October 4, 2022, at The Ohio State University James Cancer Hospital.
Ed was born April 13, 1946, to the late William Francis and Rita Gertrude (Stephenson) Hearne. On June 7, 1970, he married his college sweetheart, Carol A. (Nelson) Hearne.
Ed was a 1966 graduate of Neil McNeil High School in Scarborough, Ontario, where he was prefect, class president, track star and role model. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Kentucky’s Murray State University, which he attended on a track scholarship, and a Master of Science from Louisiana State University. Ed was a phenomenal athlete and fierce competitor, but he always made it a point to win with dignity and a handshake to his fellow runners. He was a Canadian National Champion in track and had participated in the British Empire Games, Pan-American Games and travelled throughout Europe with the East York Track Club. Ed was even scouted by the Canadian Football League. He still holds a Canadian speed record, but if you ever asked him about it, he’d just say that “he won some and lost some.” Ed was an avid nature lover, and he enjoyed photography, bird watching and RVing. He and Carol loved traveling all over North America together, and they made it to every Canadian province and 49 states (he always joked that couldn’t figure out how to get his RV to Hawaii). He retired from Lima Senior High School after 30 years of service, and he was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church. Most of all, Ed was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol A. Hearne of Lima; two children, Edmund P. (Jennifer S.) Hearne of Sahuarita, AZ; Catharine A. (David L.) Rankin of Providence, RI; grandson, Liam Connor Rankin; brother, Thomas (Fern) Hearne of Peterborough, Ontario; sister, Patricia (Dennis) Cortissoz of Guelph, Ontario and many close friends.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Father Mike Sergi will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Gethsemani Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Park Foundation, 1500 K St. NW Suite 700, Washington DC 20005.
