Dr. Jerry A. Burton, age 82 of Lima and formerly of Rittman, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 8:10 p.m. at home.
He was born November 8, 1939 in Blue Diamond, KY, to Claude and Agnes (Blackwell) Burton who preceded him in death. On July 17, 1959, he married Jean Thompson and she preceded him in death on July 23, 2005. He then married Carol (Askew) Feistel on July 9, 2007 and she survives.
Also surviving are his children: Kristine (Greg) McElroy of Wadsworth, OH and Jeffrey Paul Burton of Wheatland, WY; Carol’s children: Amy Feistel of Raleigh, NC, Lora (Nathan) Feistel Smith of Jefferson City, MO, Andrew (Tashina) W. Feistel of Seymour, MO and Richard Feistel of Florence, SC; five grandchildren, 13 step grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Larry (Phyllis) Burton of Middletown, OH. Jerry is also survived by a host of family and friends whose lives he impacted in so many ways.
He was preceded in death by Carol’s daughter, Susan Mallett.
Jerry’s life reflects over 60 years of Christian ministry. From 2012-2016, he was a pastor of Counseling and Discipleship at Lima Baptist Temple from which he retired. Prior to that he pastored Calvary Baptist Church in Rittman, OH for 33 years. and had been an adjunct professor for Moody Bible Institute for 20 years. Upon his retirement, for 3 years, he was a chaplain at Mercy Health and most recently was a Marketplace Chaplain.
He was musically gifted individual who played the steel guitar and piano. He was a choir director for ten years in Texas, five years in Lima, and 33 years in Rittman. He was a member of the Hallelujah Saints Band in Lima. He taught Sunday School until two weeks ago. He liked to watch sports of all sorts and enjoyed a good game of golf. He was an avid writer and author of “Just My Thoughts” blog. He loved to read, loved his family, children and grandchildren. He had an infectious smile.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at Lima Baptist Temple, Lima, with his nephew, Rev. Don Rooks of Branson, MO and Rev. Terry Brown of Cabool, MO presiding. Burial will follow in Rittman Cemetery, Rittman, OH. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Lima Baptist Temple.
