Carmel Lorraine Pleva peacefully passed away at home surrounded by the love of her family at 9:27p.m. on October 19, 2021.
Born February 21, 1922 in Alameda, CA to Frederick and Lucretia (Beck) Chenoweth, Carmel was raised at age 13 by her aunt and uncle, Earl J. and Rowena B. Gaines, who became her adoptive parents after moving to Pittsburgh, PA.
Carmel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband August P. (Gus) Pleva, Jr., her daughters Lorraine (Lori) Pleva McKiernan, and Annette Pleva, and her grandsons Brian P. Burke and baby boy Schuyler.
After graduating college Carmel became a member of the American Women’s Voluntary Service (AWVS) providing support services to help the nation during WWII. She worked at Warner Brothers Studios in Pittsburgh where she met Augie Pleva and her new story began.
Carmel’s greatest joy was being a wife and mother after marrying on August 9, 1947. She supported her husband in his work, military career and in his mission of becoming a Permanent Deacon. She spent her time as a homemaker and an active room mother when her daughters were in primary school after moving to Lima, OH. Carmel was a parish volunteer and enjoyed assisting the church and had been active in the St. Charles Parish choir and the Altar Rosary Society.
In later years Carmel loved to travel with her husband and family to Bermuda, the coastal beaches and to various destinations on many cruises. She was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, regularly listening to the radio broadcasts of their games.
Carmel is survived by her daughters Louise Pleva and Christine Pleva of Lima, OH and Elaine (Ronnie) Snyder of Clemmons, NC; her grandchildren Elliot (Holly) Burke, Alexa (Scott) Gross, Betsy (Michael) Montgomery, Brendan (Donna) Nolte, Kevin (Kim) Nolte, and Sarah (Dereck) Lee; and 13 great-grandchildren. A special thank you to family friends Tom Gibson and Jim Schrock, and to Amber Siefker who was Carmel’s caring healthcare aid.
It was Carmel’s wish that a private family service be observed, and there will be no visitation. Burial will be in Gethsemani Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Carmel’s honor to the August Pleva Memorial Scholarship at St. Charles Catholic School in Lima, OH. Condolences may be expressed at chiles-lamanfh.com.
