Beverly (Sue) Carr Zickafoose, 86, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2022 at The Meadows of Delphos after living with Alzheimer’s for the last four years.
Sue was born June 17, 1935 in Lima, to Ralph and Sarah (Nunnemacher) Carr who preceded her in death. On April 13, 1957 she married Edward Zickafoose who preceded her in death on March 6, 2018. They were married for 61 years.
She graduated from Elida High School in 1953 and then attended and graduated from Alderson Broaddus College (Philippi, West Virginia) in 1957. After raising the three sons, she went back to get her teaching degree from The Ohio State University. In 1967, Sue was hired by the Lima City Schools and began a long career as a first grade teacher. She taught her first eight years at Garfield Elementary School, and then moved to Lowell Elementary where she finished her 30 year teaching career until her retirement in 1997. Sue was known as a loving, caring, and soft spoken teacher who was well liked by her students and peers.
She was also very active as a member of her church, First Baptist of Lima. She taught Sunday School for many years and was director of the Children’s Choir and directed many musicals there as well. Sue loved music and sang in the church’s Senior Choir for several decades. Sue was also very involved in Churches United Pantry (CUP) in Lima. She enjoyed camping, reading, baking, and being with her family. She also loved attending sporting and musical events in which her children and grandchildren were involved.
Survivors include three sons: Jon (Jennifer) Zickafoose, Greg (Cindy) Zickafoose, and Jeff Zickafoose all of Lima; 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley (Alvin) Cockerell as well as a daughter-in-law, Anne Zickafoose.
Visitation will be at First Baptist Church from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm with a Celebration of Life Service at 5:00 pm Saturday, May 14, with Rev. Andrew Shields officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to “Ed and Sue Zickafoose Music Scholarship Fund” in care of First Baptist Church.
