Betty Delores Shimp (Zimmerman), 93 of Lima, OH, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2023.

She was born on October 21, 1929 in Lima to Karl and Magdaline (Kaiser) Zimmerman, who both preceded her in death.

She leaves behind her two adored children, Barbara Hashemi (Joe) of Long Beach, CA, and Timothy Shimp (Beverly) of Terrace Park, OH; and five cherished grandchildren; Roya (Cade) Hashemi-Murphy and Ramin Hashemi, Joel (Lindsay), Zachary (Melissa), Benjamin (Sara) Shimp, and five great grandchildren; Scott, Sydney, Saylor, Finley, and Madeline Shimp.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert E. Shimp, who passed away in August of 2004; her brothers Clifford, Carl and Donny Zimmerman; her sisters Mary Johns and Lillian Weyer.

After graduating from high school, in 1949, she married to her loving husband, Bob and started her family. In 1960, she started teaching at St. John’s due to a shortage of teachers. She attended Ohio Northern University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1964. She also received her Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Dayton in 1978. Mrs. Shimp taught grades 1 through 4 at Lima parochial and Lima City Elementary schools. She was very well respected by her colleagues and loved by her many students throughout her career as an educator.

Once Betty retired from teaching, she enjoyed playing golf with her friends. She also worked part time at Sam’s Club to fulfill some of her social activities. In 2019, to be closer to her family, she moved to SEM Terrace Retirement Community in Cincinnati, where she made many friends and managed to be the lead exercise instructor for that community. She was an excellent card player and enjoyed playing Pinochle, Bridge, and other card games with her new friends and neighbors. She was dearly loved and will be missed by many, especially her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March18, 2023 at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 240 W. Robb Ave., Lima, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the Mass from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

Entombment in Gethsemani Cemetery Mausoleum will immediately follow the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Wounded Warrior Program or a charity of your choice.
