Atwol Eugene “Gene” Hayes, age 86, was called into the presence of the Lord, at 7:06 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center.
Gene was born September 9, 1936, in Mousie, KY, to the late John Campbell and Norcie (Hayes) Triplett. On October 25, 1968, he married Dianne C. (Botkin) Hayes who preceded him in death on October 15, 2005.
Gene was a 1955 graduate of Lima Central High School, attended Alice Lloyd Community College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Kentucky. Gene also, received his certification in massage from the Dayton School of Massage. He served as the Men’s Director of Athletics at the YMCA for over 40 years, where he enjoyed working out and coaching youth basketball. Gene proudly served as a Medic in the United States Army and was a member of the Elks B.P.O.E. #54. He was a passionate fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball and he especially loved to read and enjoyed Philosophical and Religious Studies. Gene had a tender heart and loved helping those in need.
He is survived by his daughter, Angela D. (Glenn) Gossard of Lima; son-in-law, Heath Hendrickson of Waynesfield; four grandchildren, Sylvia (Justin) Schmidt of Payne, Patrick (Kayla) Gossard of Lima and Hannah Hendrickson of Lima and Logan Hendrickson of Waynesfield; six great-grandchildren, Luna, Leo and Lilly Schmidt, Landon Fox, Braylon and Adelyn Gossard and Carter Erskine; brother, Carl (Mary) Triplett of Scottsdale, AZ and his companion, Bonnie Bolen of McGuffey.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by two sons, Christopher Eugene Hayes, Patrick Eugene Hayes: daughter, Shannon T. Hendrickson; stepdad, Hollie Triplett Sr., and brother, Hollie (Betty) Triplett, Jr.
Funeral services will begin at 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2023, at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Pastor Megan Croy will officiate the service. Entombment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 13, prior to the service at the funeral home.
