On March 1, 2022, Alice Cummans-Cooley, 89, slipped the bonds of the earth to enter her eternal home. Alice was born on July 22, 1932 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to Glen and Helen Bungard. In 1951 she married James F. Cummans who preceded her in death. In 2002 she married Franklin Cooley who survives.
Alice delighted in her family. She was a blessing to her three children Jan (Tom) Reinsel, Angie (Dennis) Hefner, and James Scott (JoAnn) Cummans. She was a loving and proud grandmother to her seven grandchildren Carmyn (Michael) Thompson, Jodi Hefner, Laura (Steven) Heaphy, Chris (Sarah) Hefner, Caitlin Delaney, Jared (Ashley) Cummans, and Lyndsie Cummans. Her seven precious great-grandchildren include a namesake great-granddaughter, Alice. She cared dearly about many special nieces and nephews. Her brother, Harry (Teresa) Bungard resides in Elida. Alice was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Burris.
Alice’s first job in Lima was dressing windows at the J.C. Penney store on Market Street. She also worked as an insurance underwriter and later retired from the Lima Public Library where she worked in the Memorial Book Room and in the public relations department. Alice enjoyed extensive travel with Frank in retirement. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was instrumental in initiating the outreach breakfast program and the free store. She was a model of service to others. She was a member of the Lima Garden Club and absolutely loved all things Christmas.
The family would especially like to thank a traveling nurse at The Springs who provided such tender loving care in Alice’s final hours.
A memorial service to honor Alice will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church breakfast program.
