Adam G. Holbrook, 66, of Lima, died peacefully at home at 8:04 am on Sunday, January 24, 2021.
He was born on March 31, 1954 in Lima to Gale Holbrook and Princess Kathleen “Kathy” Holbrook, who both preceded him in death.Adam married Mary Luma on August 18, 1979 in Lima, Ohio, and they recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.
Adam served his country in the Air Force from 1972 to 1974, when he was honorably discharged due to his mental health challenges. Adam turned his disability into a strength, publishing four books that describe his life and struggles with mental illness. Adam also shared his lived experience to train police officers and other professionals how to best work with and help those who are struggling with mental health problems. Adam shared his knowledge of mental health challenges with the public through speaking engagements and interviews with local media outlets, as well as speaking to inpatient psychiatric patients regularly. Adam was an active member of the Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin County chapter of National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), and served as its president for 10 years. He was also an advocate for mental health consumers in West Central Ohio by serving on the Allen, Auglaize, and Hardin County Board of Mental Health for four years. Adam was proud of these achievements and looked forward to every opportunity to share his knowledge with others. Adam was an avid reader and an oldies rock fan, spending much of his days listening to his favorite music. His love of music is passed down to each of his four children.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife Mary A. Holbrook are his sons Daniel of Wapakoneta and Brian (Liz Waltz) Holbrook of Glenside, PA; his daughters Amanda (Troy Austin) Holbrook and Kellie Holbrook both of Columbus; his three grandchildren Oliver, Heidi and Clara; his step-mother Barbara A. Fields Holbrook; his brother Paul Michael (Barbara) Holbrook of Lima; his sisters Rhonda (Bob) Mowery of Lima, Lucy (Joe) Nemeth of Columbus and Sandy Holbrook of Florida; his sisters-in-law Kathy (Mike) Powell of Celina, Connie Fisher of Wauchula, FL and Teresa (Charles) Luma-Tingler of Somerville, SC; his brother-in-law Rodney (Cindy) Luma of Waynesfield; his beloved dog Baby and his beloved cats Grace and Patches.
He was preceded in death by twin brothers, Dale and Gale Holbrook; his father, Gale Holbrook; his mother, P. Kathleen “Kathy” (Prater) Aab; his step-father Robert Aab.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
Interment in Preston Cemetery, Alger will immediately follow the services.
