John R. Hooker, age 68, was called home to the Lord at 10:22 a.m. Thursday, November 23, 2017, at The Ohio State University, James Cancer Center, Columbus.

John was born January 14, 1949 in Lima, Ohio to the late Raymond E. and Iona V. (Bielefeld) Hooker. On January 17, 1970 he married Nita J. (Smith) Hooker who survives in Belle Center, Ohio.

John was a 1967 graduate of Lima Central Catholic High School and attended Northwestern Business College. He proudly served in the United States Army during Vietnam. John retired in 2008 from Procter & Gamble. He enjoyed model trains, fishing and boating. He especially loved taking friends and family pontooning on Indian Lake. He was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and The Ohio State Buckeyes. John was a very caring and compassionate person who loved helping others. He attended Alger First United Methodist Church. John was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Sabres Gun Club and the Indian Lake Moose Lodge #1533.

Survivors include, wife, Nita J. Hooker of Belle Center; son, John “Andy” (Heather L.) Hooker of Westerville; daughter, Amber J. (Joshua L.) Walters of Lima and his beloved grandchildren, Sydney B. Hooker, Skyler B. Hooker, Savanna B. Hooker, Amaris J. Walters and Jaala L.Walters; brothers, Daniel (Sue) Hooker and Donald (Candace) Hooker both of Lima; sister, Lynn Griffin of Lima; sisters-in-law, Carol Hooker of Lima, Joyce Hooker of Lima, Karen Hooker, of Lima, Sue (Larry) Dodds of Pleasant Hill, Karen (Jim) Otterman of Lathrop, MO and Judy (Gene) Bailey of Lima; brothers-in-law, Brian (Ann) Smith of Bluffton and David Smith of Creston and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by brothers, Eddie Hooker, Larry Hooker, James Hooker, Leonard Hooker, Thomas Hooker and David Hooker; sister, Mary Arlene Prater and sister-in-law, Bonnie Smith.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2017, at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL. Visitation will also be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at Alger First United Methodist Church prior to the funeral.

Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 28, at Alger First United Methodist Church, 101 Montville St, Alger, OH 45812. Pastor Don Clinger will officiate the service. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date in Preston Cemetery, Alger. The United States Army and VFW #1275 will provide military honors.
