A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 10:00 am at Shawnee United Methodist Church, Lima. Burial will be held privately with the family at a later date. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 pm at CHILES- LAMAN FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICE-SHAWNEE CHAPEL.
James Clifford “Buzz” Alder, 86, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. Jim was born January 18, 1931 in Delphos to Lucille (Alder) Fetzer who preceded him in death. On November 13, 1954, he married his loving wife and best friend Betty (Lambert) Alder who survives.
Buzz graduated from Lima Central High School, where he was named all state in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables where he played football. He was drafted into MLB through the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He was an amazing athlete and his love for sports stayed with him throughout his entire life. Buzz was a member of the inaugural class in Shawnee High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame and was a member of the Ohio Hall of Fame for fast pitch softball. Jim served our country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He was extremely proud of his service and his time as a Marine. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for more than 30 years before he retired at the age of 55. Jim was a devoted member of the Elks Club #54 in Lima and Shawnee United Methodist Church. He loved volunteering for local team sporting events and his church. His great joys in life were spending time with his family, watching and attending sporting events, and fishing. He loved vintage western and war movies.
Survivors include: three children, Lori Powers-Basinger of Columbus, Lisa (Timothy) Alder-Patton of Powell, Michael James Alder of Lima; and three grandchildren, Alicia Alder Powers, Brett (Monica) Patton, and Jillian (Benjamin) Thompson.
He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families as well as countless friends and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Benjamin Fetzer and Edward Fetzer and his son in law, Thomas Basinger.
