Donald L. Backstrom, age 85, passed away at 11:26 a.m. Thursday, November 30, 2017, at his home.
Donald was born August 6, 1932 in Northwood, North Dakota, to the late Carl H. and Helen (Stroud) Backstrom. On April 5,1959, he married Martha Jo (Davis) Backstrom, who survives in Cridersville.
Donald was a 1950 graduate of Morehead High School, Moorehead, Minnesota and graduated from North Dakota State Univesity with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Donald retired in 1992 from Westinghouse Aerospace Division, after 34 years. He was an avid model railroader, enjoyed gardening, reading and crossword puzzles. He loved spending time with his family and rooting for The Ohio State Buckeyes. Donald was a life member the Elks B.P.O.E. #54 and he was a 50 year member the IEEE and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Jo Backstrom of Cridersville; daughter, Ellen K. (Patrick) McCarthy of Dublin; sons, Roger D. (Teresa) Backstrom of Columbus and William L. (Beth) Backstrom of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Sean (Anna) McCarthy of Cincinnati, Erin (Christopher) Holliday of Pittsburgh, PA, Tyler Backstrom of Columbus and Logan Backstrom of Columbus; sisters, Rita (Duncan) MacKenzie of Minneapolis, MN and Sharon Backstrom of Rochester, MI.
He is preceded in death by brothers, Gene Backstrom and Charles Backstrom and sisters, Faye Donart and Kelly Swanson.
Funeral services will begin 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 4, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 301 W. Market Street, Lima, Ohio 45801. Pastor David Harris will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Memorial park Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 3, at CHILES – LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church.
