Catherine F. Stemen, age 101, left to be with her Lord at 5:27 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Shawnee Manor. She was born May 30, 1915, in Lima, Ohio to the late Leonard J. Ruth and Alice G. (Counsellor) Ruth. On June 8, 1935, she married Clyde F. Stemen, who passed away on June 5, 1975.
Mrs. Stemen is survived by her only son Thomas F. Stemen of Lima, Ohio and preceded in death by her only daughter Mary C. Smith. She is also survived by two granddaughters: Leslie S. Smith (Michael) Becker of Sunnyvale, CA and Chris Smith (Joe) Clabes of Lexington, KY. She has four great-grandchildren: Andrew, Allison, Lauren and Tyler.
Catherine survived all of her brothers and sisters: Richard R. W. Ruth, Mildred C. (Ruth) Stemen, Dorothy S. G. (Ruth) Dingledine, and Leonard J. Ruth, Jr.
Her family has determined that she was the last surviving graduate of the Shawnee High School class of 1933. She took an early interest in cooking and provided many inventive meals for her family and friends through her long life.
In 1985, Mrs. Stemen retired from the Lima Public Library, having worked in the Memorial Book Room. She was a prolific reader of the classics and historical novels. She loved America and read many accounts of its history and never missed an opportunity to vote. And then there was always the inevitable crossword puzzles!
She was a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Up to the last weeks of her life, Catherine, with her clever sense of humor and agile mind, still recited poems, recollected stories and sang songs from her past.
A private funeral service will be held at a later date. Burial will follow in Salem Mennonite Cemetery in Elida, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society .
The family has entrusted the CHILES-LAMAN FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, SHAWNEE CHAPEL with making funeral arrangements.
